Cannabis Oil, CBD Oil and Hemp oil – What is the Difference?

What is the difference between cannabis oil, CBD oil and hemp oil? Is there a difference at all? Why do some people choose CBD and others choose THC? Why should you choose cannabis oil at all? These are regular questions asked daily by regular people.

Cannabis Oil, CBD and Hemp – All Cannabis

According to Namaste, CBD oil refers to oil that “contains a concentration of CBD, or cannabidiol. It is most easily extracted from hemp specifically cultivated to be high in CBD since it only contains trace amounts of THC7. This makes the ratio of CBD to THC much higher.”

Namaste also mentions that hemp oil is derived from the hemp plant. “Hemp plants are a form of cannabis sativa that is typically grown for industrial purposes. These plants contain low levels of cannabinoids including the two most commonly known: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). The oil is extracted from the hemp plants by pressing the seeds they produce. This method of extraction is similar to how olive and coconut oil is obtained.

Hemp Oil and CBD Oil Come From the Cannabis Plant

But they come from different strains of the Cannabis sativa. Growers are breeding cannabis plants to get high THC plants, high CBD plants, and hemp seed plants. The hemp strain has a very low count of cannabinoids. Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, while CBD is extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalk.

The CBD strain of Cannabis sativa does have psychoactive compounds while the hemp plant does not. THC and CBD are just two of the 113 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, each of which has medicinal value. CBD cannabis oil and hemp oil are low in THC and have no side effects;  THC cannabis oil can make you feel euphoric.

Hemp Oil has Low CBD

Hemp has a low CBD level. It is also very nutritional and can be used to maintain health. It is packed with the right balance of Omegas 3 and 6, vitamins and minerals needed to remain in good health. People keep hemp oil in the kitchen as a foodstuff – for their omega doses, Vitamin E, Potassium, Magnesium, Vitamin B1 and B2.

It is also used to make soaps, shampoos, plastics and paints. Cannabis oil is a natural medication. It can treat bone disorders, cancer, psoriasis, nervous system disorders, seizures, high blood pressure, low appetite, insomnia, arthritis and bacteria growth. Hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant, derived by pressing the seeds, in a similar way that olive oil is made.

Cannabis oil is made using a solvent such as alcohol or coconut oil to extract the cannabinoids. Cannabis oil can be high in CBD. It is a very useful medicinal compound and treats seizures, pain and inflammation, nausea and vomiting, anxiety and depression, and even chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Differences Between Hemp and Cannabis Oils

Cannabis oil has been confused with hemp oil. Both oils come from the Cannabis sativa plant. Cannabis is grown and produced in 3 ways: herbal (dried flowering tops and leaves); resin (flattened solid made from the sticky substance in the plant); oil (an extract of cannabis leaves and flowers).

  • Cannabis – contains THC and CBD, amongst many other cannabinoids. Cannabis is also called marijuana and is grown for its medical and recreational uses. The THC makes people high and now growers are engineering plants high in THC for the recreational market. The CBD content in cannabis oil is also high and therefore cannabis oil is used to cure many ailments.
  • Hemp – contains mostly CBD and is used as a general health booster, plus medicinal therapy. Hemp is mostly grown for its fibre and seeds, used in manufacturing and to create health products. The lack of THC makes hemp a safer, more acceptable health therapy, used for nutritional and medicinal purposes. Hemp oil is revered for its ideal omega 3 / omega 6 ratio while CBD oil is used as a medication, with no side effects.

Remember that cannabis oil is an extract, not an essential oil.
