Does Cannabis Oil Have Any Side Effects?

Does Cannabis Oil Have Any Side Effects?

Does cannabis oil have any side effects? That is a good question as many people want to take the medication but do not want to suffer undue discomfort. The cannabis plant is highly regulated in many countries because parts of it can cause addiction and people were using it mainly to make money and to get high. Two of the main chemical compounds found within the plant, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are cannabinoids which have remarkable health benefits for human illnesses – but they also come with certain side-effects.

It seems that the side effects from using THC are worse than those from CBD as THC gives you the high – it is a psychoactive compound. CBD oil needs to be taken carefully, according to the right dosage which fits the ailment. Side effects have been recorded, including low blood pressure, hallucinations, dizziness and depression – but every patient reacts differently to every medication.

How Does it Feel to Take CBD?

So much has been written about the positive effects of cannabis oil but we do also need to understand that such potent chemical compounds do have side effects. The side effects of CBD are usually minimal and the positive benefits far outweigh the negative disadvantages some people may experience. Researchers can reassure their patients that they can never take an overdose of CBD, so it is very safe. Safer than THC which is psychoactive and can result in paranoia, anxiety, dry mouth, red eyes, lethargy and forgetfulness. CBD on the other hand is more of a health medication and, while it does have side effects, these are negligible when considering the goodness you are getting from the cannabis oil. It is also able to offset the psychoactivity of THC, acting as a natural anti-depressant and protector of the nervous system.

Possible side effects of CBD

  • Complications when taking pharmaceutical drugs – CBD can hinder the metabolism of prescribed drugs especially those meant for the liver as it neutralises some of the enzymes.
  • Feeling drowsy – it all depends on the dose and what you are taking the CBD for as it can induce complete relaxation and sleepiness, or a state of alertness so do not drive a car if it makes you sleepy!
  • Low blood pressure – if  you take more CBD in concentrated doses, you will experience a drop in blood pressure which then promotes lightheadedness. Be careful if you are taking medication for high blood pressure. Drink a cup of coffee for the lightheadedness.
  • Dry mouth – you will feel thirsty as the endocannabinoid system hinders secretion of saliva when you take CBD because it stimulates cannabinoid receptors in the salivary glands.
  • Parkinson’s Disease – high doses of CBD have found that the tremor and muscle movement associated with this disease gets worse. Reduce the dose to reduce the shaking as CBD has also been shown to assist Parkinson’s Disease patients to relieve their tremors.

The side effects of cannabis oil are minimal and while they should be noted, they should not alarm anyone. CBD is a wonderful health therapy that is practically devoid of side effects and the pros far outweigh the cons of using it as a health medication.
