What are the Differences Between THC and CBD Cannabis Oils?

Cannabis is a fascinating plant with enormous healing capabilities. This is thanks to the many different cannabinoids within cannabis, the two most common and well-used being THC and CBD. What are the differences between THC and CBD cannabis oils? This is something we will break down here. A THC-infused cannabis oil is very different from a CBD-infused cannabis oil. They look different, taste different and react differently inside your body. Why would you take CBD and not THC? Or vice versa?

THC or CBD, that is the Question

THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, the only psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. CBD is cannabidiol, a cannabinoid free from side effects but packed full of healing abilities. THC is also nature’s incredible healer, but in different ways.

CBD and THC react in different ways to cannabinoid receptors in our bodies and brains. THC copies an endocannabinoid called anandamide, which activates the CB1 receptors, found mainly in the brain – therefore instilling a sense of euphoria and increased appetite.  CBD prevents THC from binding with receptor CB1 – which shows when it mitigates the high THC would cause and it reduces the anxiety THC would cause.

THC is illegal in most parts of the world because of is psychoactive properties which have been abused by people for centuries. CBD, however, is a mild plant therapy that is legal in many parts of the world as medical cannabis. CBD interacts with other cannabinoid receptors in the human endocannabinoid system – mostly in the central and nervous systems, and immune system. Endocannabinoid receptors regulate the balance of moods, pain, appetite, energy levels, hormones, memory and more.

What do THC and CBD do in the Body?

Some medical cannabis products are a blend of THC and CBD as this empowers the healing process of the compounds. This blend is safe to take if the THC ration is less than the CBD – the CBD mitigates the psychoactive effects of the THC and makes it safe for all users. CBD can also offer relief to psychosis (and that caused by THC) and depression, including other neurological disorders. CBD does not bind to any receptors like THC does – it tends to modulate the receptors, allowing the body to increase its own endocannabinoids – which is why it is so therapeutic. The endocannabinoid system is there to regulate the immune system and keep it in a healthy balance, fighting disease at every opportunity.
