Giving Medical Cannabis to Patients with Autism

Should we be giving medical cannabis to patients with autism? Most patients with autism are children, as this disease raises its head from around age 2 to 3. There are adults living with autism, that they probably contracted when they were toddlers. There are no clinical studies on this pertinent subject yet but there are many parents out there already giving medical cannabis to patients with autism – their children. Doctors require evidence that medical cannabis works to treat autism, but no one is sure how it works as clinical trials are lacking – it is a viscious circle. Chatting to parents who have tried medical cannabis for children with autism, it sounds very positive that the natural remedy actually does work. It works to make children happier, healthier and less alone. That should be good enough and enough food for thought?

One mother decided to give her child with autism hemp oil. This cannabis oil consists of cannabidiol (CBD) which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from cannabis, and a natural health remedy. This child spoke his first words after his first dose of hemp oil and after only 3 weeks could communicate in his language quite adequately. Before his mother tried hemp oil, the child was extremely frustrated that he could not talk and would hurt himself. Now he is a happy child who can chat to his friends.

What Happens When a Patient has Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex disorder of the brain and comes in many different strains. Children are uniquely affected and most of them experience difficulties in communicating, being sociable and displaying repetitive and obsessive behaviours. Some do hurt themselves out of sheer frustration and often have speech difficulties. Some autistic children are extremely intelligent and may be talented at one hobby such as art or sport or technology. More children get autism every year and causes go back to early brain development. Most cases of autism are caused by changes in a rare gene and environmental factors. Babies are at risk if mothers do not get enough folic acid during pregnancy, if she is older or had an illness during pregnancy.

What Happens When a Patient With Autism is Given Medical Cannabis?

Cannabinoids in the cannabis are very powerful chemicals which can work with the body’s endocannabinoid system to heal many conditions. CBD is best for children as it is harmless while tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is psychoactive so not a good option for children. Studies are revealing that these cannabinoids help to manage the social behaviour of patients with autism, as well as other dysfunctional behaviours related to the disorder. Parents are saying that by giving medical cannabis to their children with autism, they are regulating moods, sleep patterns, seizures and reliance on pharmaceutical drugs.

Some researchers believe that when the body does not produce enough endocannabinoids, autism results. These healthy molecules are similar to the cannabinoids in cannabis. Cannabis cannabinoids cling to certain receptors in the brain and immune system and can help the brain to communicate again to these receptors. The best part about giving medical cannabis to patients with autism is that it deals with the symptoms and assists the patient to have a better quality of life: better sleep, better appetite, less lethargy, less anxiety and less of the symptoms associated with autism, as discussed already.
